Profile The basic aim of the Department of Commerce since its inception is to provide quality education and to help the Research Scholars. It is enriched with fine infrastructural facility which is periodically upgraded.

The sanctioned strength for M. Com. (Special) and M. F. C. are 20 each (excluding the special category) and 14 seats for M. Phil. Degree. The Department of Commerce has produced 61 M. Phil Scholars and 38 Ph. D. Scholars during the years 1996-2001. The Department conducts Symposia, Seminars and workshops to build-up the knowledge of the students in current affairs. To bridge the gap between Commerce and Computer technology, the department has a tie-up with Software Technologies Group (STG), SSi and SRM Radiant where the students are trained in computer application.

| Madurai Kamaraj University is the first university among the mainstream universities of the country to establish an exclusive department for Entrepreneurship Studies during the year 1993. The department has conducted the academic and research programmes as detailed below: |

Entrepreneurship Education:

Entrepreneurship Education has gained prominence as well as momentum in the higher education sector during the current decade. It is increasingly felt that Entrepreneurship is not a mere activity but as a state of mind. The purpose of the Entrepreneurship Education is to bring the best out of the individual.
Accordingly, major focus was given on the soft skills in the academic programmes of the department. Entrepreneurship was inculcated as a culture among the students. The department earlier successfully conducted two major academic programmes:
-
MS (Information Technology and Management) and
- MS (Non-Government Organization and Management)
These programmes were conducted by the University under the industry – university collaboration scheme during the period 1997 – 1998 to 2005 - 2006. Around 1000 students were benefited out of the job oriented academic programmes of the department. Many of the alumni have become successful entrepreneurs in the different sectors of the industry.
Infrastructure:
Madurai Kamaraj University provided building and state of the art infrastructure for the Department of Entrepreneurship Studies during the year 2003 – 2004 from the funds generated by the Department of Entrepreneurship Studies out of the self supporting courses. The Department has so far contributed Rs.200 lakhs to Madurai Kamaraj University.

Academic Programe in the offing:
The Syndicate has approved to offer MBA (Social Entrepreneurship) from the academic year 2011 – 2012 onwards as a collaborative venture with the Department of Management Studies. This will be a self financing PG Programme of the Department.
Other Entrepreneurship Promotional Activities of the department:
1.To assist the colleges affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University to establish Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) with the assistance of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi.
2.To train the college teachers through a two week Faculty Development Programme (FDP) in Entrepreneurship Orientation to serve as the Nodal Officers of the proposed Entrepreneurship Development Cells (EDCs) of the colleges.
3.To encourage college teachers to undertake research in Entrepreneurship.
4.To offer elective course in Entrepreneurship for the students of the other departments of Madurai Kamaraj University.
