Born to the humble parents Ponnumani-Paulammal at the Chitharal Village in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India, in 1954, Dr.P.P.Chellathurai started his Academic journey in the year 1983 as an Assistant Professor in Arul Anandar College which is a sister concern of Loyola College, Chennai. A Teacher and Scholar in Historical Studies, Dr.P.P.Chellathurai has obtained Doctorate in History in the year 1985 and later in 2014, he earned his another Doctorate in Management Studies from the Madurai Kamaraj University.
Dr.P.P.Chellathurai was inspired by Swami Vivekananda's principles and committed himself in kindling and awakening the inner power among youngsters and motivating them to contribute to nation building. During this period, the then President of India Shri.R.Venkataraman made an appeal to the Teachers of the country to work towards social amity and national integrity through education. In consequence, Prof.P.P.Chellathurai established the Indian Institute of National Integration at Virudhunagar in the year 1992. In the same year he proved his commitment by editing and publishing a research journal "UNITE‟ (Unity, Nationality, Integrity, Tolerance, Equality). His teaching experience spans for more than 30 years from Assistant Professor to Professor at Madurai Kamaraj University. He had made new teaching learning strategies under paradigm shift in pedagogy from teacher-centric to student-centric and reproductive to creative. Apart from teaching the regular students he has also handled classes on Indian Culture, Modern Governments, General Studies, etc. for the aspirants in the Coaching Centre for IAS Exams which he established at MKU in 1992.
As the first Director of Swamy Vivekananda Higher Study and Research Center, Dr. P.P. Chellathurai had designed and developed an innovative PG Diploma in Vivekananda Studies for Youth Empowerment. As the Professor of the Department of Youth Welfare Studies, MKU, he had designed an innovative Post-graduate programme - M.A. Administrative Studies for the benefit of the aspirants of civil services. Based on Prof.P.P.Chellathurai's Report, the Government of Tamil Nadu issued G.O Ms.No. 42 dated 23-06-2012 for establishing a "Curriculum Development Cell‟ in Ten State Universities of Tamil Nadu for Quality Enhancement.
During his stint as the Dean, College Development Council, Madurai Kamaraj University, Dr.P.P.Chellathurai had geared up the process of affiliation to U.G and P.G courses. More than 400 Certificate, Diploma and Degree courses were given to Affiliated Colleges during his tenure. He had facilitated the formulation of 44 Degree and Vocational Diploma courses in a record time under a centralized system for introduction in the Affiliated Colleges.
It is no wonder Prof. P.P.Chellathurai has been awarded the Honorary D.Litt degree by the International Tamil University, Maryland, USA for his "Contributions to Higher Education" in the year 2008. Dr.P.P.Chellathurai's illustrious career has been rewarded with many Awards and Recognitions for his all-round contributions in the field of Higher Education and Research. He has received National Recognition by winning the National Award twice in the Model National Youth Parliament Competitions conducted by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India.
Prof.P.P.Chellathurai has got a rich research experience to his credit too with publishing 5 Books, 2 Edited volumes and 37 scholarly articles in National and International journals. He also served as the Editor and a member in the Editorial Boards of reputed journals. He has presented more than 150 research Papers at the National level Seminars and has made 9 Presentations at the International Conferences in various countries. He visited many Institutions of great repute like Cambridge University, University of Paris, Stanford University, Heidelberg University, Birmingham University, Vatican University, Toronto Universityetc., to deliver Invited Lectures and shared his expertise in higher education and on global developmental issues. He has visited many countries like U.S.A., France, England, Canada, Germany, Italy, China, Srilanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, Sharjah, Saudi Arabia and Baharain in academic and research pursuit.
Prof.P.P.Chellathurai has carried out many research projects and other collaborative programmes by obtaining funds from funding agencies like UGC, ICSSR, Government of Tamil Nadu, etc. to the tune of 15 crores. He is also a specialist in Industrial and Labour Relations for enhanced productivity. He had signed several MoU's with reputed organizations in India and abroad to boost Research & Development.
Dr. P.P. Chellathurai has profusely contributed in providing Consultancy services to various organizations like the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Govt. of India, Government of Tamil Nadu, State Planning Commission - Govt. of Tamil Nadu. Based on his Report the Department of Higher Education (K2), Government of Tamil Nadu- through G.O MS.No.41 dt.23-06-2012 launched the scheme of inviting renowned Professors from Foreign Universities to the Universities in Tamil Nadu for enhancing quality of research and collaborative research.
Having spent more than three decades in teaching and research in Universities and Colleges, Dr.P.P.Chellathurai has mastered not only the art of teaching to ignite young minds but also the man-management techniques. He has not left any position untouched in the Academic arena. He had occupied the top job of Registrar of 2 Universities in the State of Tamil Nadu namely Periyar University and Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. He has also donned the mantle of "Faculty Head‟ at the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Govt. of India in the year 1997-98. His contribution to Higher Education and Institution building as member of Syndicate, Senate, Academic Council and Board of Studies of many Universities and Colleges are noteworthy.
Dr.P.P.Chellathurai's journey personified his sheer hard work and perseverance. He has made an indelible mark in all the positions he has adorned in the Higher Educational Institutions. During his stint as the Registrar of Periyar University, he was instrumental in getting the 12B status to the University. As the Registrar of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University he has played a pivotal role in signing as many as 10 Collaborative Research Projects and Teaching Programmes with the reputed International and National Institutions like McGill University, Canada, International Foundation for Science, Sweden, M/s.Biotech Marine, ZI Quemper Quezennec, France, University of Sannio, Italy, University of Naples L' Orientale, Institutional Centre for Aromatherapy, Research & Development, New Delhi.
Prof. P.P.Chellathurai, who has assumed charge as the 16th Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, has got more than 40 years of association with the University as a studious student, an efficient teacher and an able administrator. He has held almost all Academic and Administrative positions of Madurai Kamaraj University including the Dean- College Development Council, Special Officer – Planning & Development, Director – Constituent Colleges, Director-Publication Division, International Students Advisor, Warden, Founder-Principal – MKU Constituent College, Director / Professor – Department of Youth Welfare Studies, Chairperson – School of Youth Empowerment etc.
As a person with a kind heart and an empathetic mind, Dr.P.P.Chellathurai has contributed substantially to the outreach programmes of the University. As the Zonal Co-ordinator of Youth Red Cross (YRC) at Madurai Kamaraj University, Prof. P.P. Chellathurai had established 90 Blood Donors Clubs in 90 Colleges through which 10,000 units of blood were donated to Government Hospitals every year to save the lives of poor children, women and men. He was also instrumental in the adoption of all Government Hospitals in the region under the aegis of Red Cross Society. A total of 700 YRC student volunteers painted 4000 old cots, stretchers etc., on a single day for the benefit of the poor patients. The youth were motivated to do painting and other refurbishing activities at these hospitals. For the first time in this part of the country, 150 youth were trained in Disaster Management. He did the Cleanliness drive in collaboration with the Madurai District Collector. He also organized 10,000 youth at a time to write national level essay competition on the theme of "Awakening Indians to India" sponsored by Chinmaya Yuva Kendra.
Prof.P.P.Chellathurai was instrumental in the creation of the Department of Youth Welfare Studies and the School of Youth Empowerment at Madurai Kamaraj University. He mobilized an amount of Rs.60 Lakhs from Philanthropists and Madurai District Collector under Self-Sufficiency Scheme for the construction of the three-storeyed building for the School of Youth Empowerment, Madurai Kamaraj University. He established a Coaching Centre for IAS Exams at Madurai Kamaraj University in 1992 and many have got into All India and State Civil Services. Prof.P.P.Chellathurai established the Anna Centenary Coaching Academy of the Govt. of Tamil Nadu for IAS Exams in 2010. He had also played an advisory role in the establishment of several Arts & Science, Engineering and Professional Colleges across the State of Tamil Nadu.
As a firm believer in the Olympic motto "Faster, Higher and Stronger", Prof.P.P.Chellathurai is well known for accomplishing difficult tasks on record time. He is a specialist in Youth Empowerment, Time-management, Human Resource Development, Interpersonal Relationship Skill, Team-building, Leadership and invoking the power of the sub-conscious mind. He has organized over 100 Human Resource Development Training Programmes for students and teachers in Schools, Colleges and Universities.
Dr.P.P.Chellathurai has inculcated the values of Parliamentary democracy by conducting National Youth Parliament programmes as the Nodal functionary of MKU. As the representative of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Govt. of India, he has organized, conducted and adjudged several Model National Youth Parliament Competitions in several Universities and Colleges. He had the privilege of having a 45-minute discussion with the President of India at the Rashtrapthi Bhavan, New Delhi along with 15 students who won National Level Award in the Model National Youth Parliament Competition in the year 2003.
As a Senior Educationalist, Prof. P.P.Chellathurai has chalked out a thoughtful and meaningful blue-print with defined and time-bound goals for taking the University to greater heights. Prof. P.P. Chellathurai stands inspired by the Japanese model of Zero-defect and superlative quality movement (1950-1960) which has made Japan the global economic super power in 1960 after the devastation in the second world war. He proposes to replicate and implement the same movement in the University Departments, Schools and Colleges affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University.
The Vice-Chancellor would tirelessly endeavour to provide a vibrant, transparent, efficient, time-bound, result-oriented and developmental administration so that it would be a student, teacher, public and environment friendly one. Infrastructural, Intellectual and Instructional facilities would be expanded and strengthened. University-Industry collaboration and Networking with Institutions in India and abroad for knowledge exchange and transfer will be promoted.
The financial policy of the University will be towards fund mobilization and utilization for institutional stabilization. Funds will be generated through Consultancy and Collaborative research projects, Patent services, research publications, etc. To streamline, strengthen and expand Distance Education programmes, top priority will be given to develop new academic programmes to benefit school drop outs, school teachers, job-seekers, employees, home-makers, construction workers, women, children, etc.
At the academic front, the Vice-Chancellor vows to provide top-class education, quality enhancement, innovation in teaching and research with focus on creativity and employability. Setting up of World Class Curriculum Development Cells for various disciplines is the first step in that direction. Teacher, student, and community empowerment will be the thrust areas of all the academic programmes offered by the University. Centres of Excellence in emerging disciplines are to be set up pooling together the intellectual resources of serving and retired faculty members.
Research in solar energy, bio-diesel, biotechnology, nanotechnology, Marine-technology, social harmony, human resource development, health and hygiene, medicinal plants, environment, entrepreneurship etc. will be given top most priority and importance. Faculty members will be periodically trained by the renowned experts in India and abroad and thereby avenues will be created to get National and International-funded research Projects. Awards and rewards will be given to the achievers in Research. A Centre for Innovation will be set up by availing the expertise of the high profile retired faculty members and promising serving faculty members of Madurai Kamaraj University. A Patent Cell will be set up to attract innovations made in research in various sectors and support would be given for registration of patent rights and commercialization of the patent products. Green and Red carpets are being rolled out to Teachers and Researchers in the University for speedy research output.
The immediate mission of the Vice-Chancellor is to restore the University to one of the Top 10 Universities in the country by 2018. The long term vision is to make MKU as one of the Top 200 Universities in the world by 2019.
